Statement on 2022 election
Unfortunately, once again, the board of the Hawthorn Football Club has tried to sneak past members the opportunity to nominate for the Hawthorn Football Club Board.
There has been no communication, no warning and no consideration of good governance, transparency or the Club's obligations to members.
Hawks for Change was formed in 2021 because we want to make this Club one that genuinely represents the views and values of members and supporters. We want to build a community Club, a democratic Club and a successful Club – on and off the footy field.
There is nothing wrong with democracy and genuine Hawks members having the chance to serve the Club they love.
The Hawthorn board should not be a club within a club. All members have the right to stand for election and be given the opportunity to do so.
We acknowledge all Hawthorn members who have put up their hands to stand for election to the board this year.
In particular, Hawks for Change acknowledges the powerful statement of former premiership player and premiership football director Andrew Gowers to stand for the presidency of our great Club.
Andy has shown himself to be selfless in his commitment to the Club and improving our on field performance and off field governance. Last year, Andy stood out of the election to try and find a peaceful resolution to the Club's push against democracy. He was told by the Club that he would chair the nominations committee to find a new president - a committee championed by Hawks for Change. Instead, Peter Nankivell was appointed chair of that committee and somehow found himself it's proposed nominee for president. As we called out at the time that process was flawed, failed and wrong.
Hawks for Change are proud to endorse Andy Gowers to be the next Hawthorn President. We encourage you to support his candidacy and get involved in his campaign.
We will have more to say on the 2022 election, including which candidates we will endorse, in the coming days.
